5 Reasons Why Blogging for Photographers Is So Important

For Photographers

As a photographer, your time is precious—most of it gets eaten up by shooting, editing, and running your business. So, when someone tells you to add blogging to your to-do list, you might feel like throwing your camera at them. But here’s the thing: photographers need to blog and they need to do it consistently. This isn’t just some trendy extra thing to do. It’s a powerhouse tool that can boost your business in ways Instagram and TikTok can’t.

Here are five reasons why blogging for photographers is so important, and why it might just be the smartest investment you make for your business.

1. Blogging Boosts Your SEO (a.k.a. Helps You Get Found on Google)

You’re an amazing photographer, but if people can’t find you online, it’s like you don’t exist. This is a main reason why photographers need to blog. When you blog about your sessions, your process, or your favorite locations, you naturally add keywords that will help you be found by potential clients. Keywords like “Salt Lake City wedding photographer” or “Austin headshot photographer” are examples of what Google loves. On top of having great keywords, you can also add alt text to your images and make sure your headings are relevant to your keywords.

If you are using Showit with WordPress as your blogging platform, I can’t say enough good things about using the Premium Yoast Plugin. There is also a free version, but if you can afford the paid version, do it! This plugin will help you know what you need to tweak for optimal SEO blog posts.

The more consistent and relevant your blog posts, the higher you’ll rank on Google. And higher rankings mean more eyeballs on your work—and more inquiries from dream clients.

2. Blogging for Photographers Builds Trust with Potential Clients

Imagine a bride-to-be searching for a wedding photographer. She stumbles onto your blog and sees you’ve photographed dozens of stunning weddings at her dream venue. Now she knows you’re the photographer for her.

Blog posts let you show off your expertise, share your personality, and answer questions your clients didn’t even know they had. When they see how much you care and know, they’ll trust you before they even send that first email. So remember, photographers need to blog to keep their work relevant in the fast-paced digital world.

Blogging is your opportunity to not only let others see who you are as an artist, it’s your chance for potential clients to hear your voice. For example, you’ll never find me starting a blog post with “Hey girl! So glad you showed up today!”. I don’t generally ever say “Hey Girl” to anyone. So it wouldn’t be authentic for me to start a blog post that way. I tend to write how I speak. When you do that, you’ll connect with people through your art and your personality.

3. Photographers Need to Blog So They Stay Relevant (at least the content does!)

When photographers blog, they create lasting impressions that can resonate with potential clients for years. Social media posts disappear into the void faster than you can say, “What happened to my Reel?” But a blog? It lives forever. You can showcase entire sessions or weddings, write about what makes you different, and curate the exact vibe you want potential clients to see.

Plus, your blog lets you highlight the stories behind your photos—like how you captured the perfect golden-hour glow or the emotional first look that left everyone in tears. People connect with stories, and your blog is the perfect place to tell them.

4. The Ultimate Portfolio for Photographers

Let’s be real: the photography world is crowded. So how do you stand out? By being more than “just another photographer.” Your blog gives you a platform to share your voice, style, and experience.

Blogging for photographers isn’t just for sharing sessions. This is also the platform to establish yourself as an expert in your field. Do your clients always show up looking amazing because of the style guide you send them? Do you have epic locations that make other photographers jealous? Are you a light seeker, always capturing that perfect golden light? Write about those topics as well! They set you up as knowing your stuff, and what clients isn’t drawn to that?

Maybe you’re the go-to photographer for adventurous couples who want epic mountaintop elopements. Or maybe you’re the queen of cozy, in-home family sessions. Whatever your niche, blogging helps you carve it out and shout it to the world.

Remember, photographers need to blog consistently to ensure their audience stays engaged and informed.

5. Blogging Gives You Content for Days (Without More Work)

Ultimately, photographers need to blog because it serves as a valuable resource for both you and your clients.

Here’s a secret: every blog post you write can fuel your other marketing efforts. That one blog post about your favorite senior photo poses? Break it up into Instagram captions, Facebook posts, Pinterest pins, or even an email newsletter.

Blogging isn’t just about creating content for your website—it’s about having a steady stream of material to use across your platforms. Work smarter, not harder!
